LAW-BUNKER

Where the news meets the docket, and loses.

About Law-Bunker

We read the news about federal cases. We pull the actual filings. We summarize what they say. Then we debunk the coverage — and grade it.All with a lawyer in the loop.

A reader's guide to what the court actually did, and a report card for how the news described it.

Law-Bunker is an AI-assisted publication edited by Andrew Benard, attorney. It exists for the moment after a headline says a judge "struck down" something, when a reasonable person wonders what the judge actually signed.

How it works

  1. It reads the day's coverage of federal court cases: district courts, the courts of appeals and the Supreme Court.
  2. It finds the real filings. District and appellate documents come from CourtListener and its RECAP archive, run by the Free Law Project; Supreme Court documents come from supremecourt.gov.
  3. AI models running on Fireworks AI draft a plain-English memo of what those documents say, with every fact pinned to a document and page, and grade each news story against them, A to F.
  4. An attorney reviews and edits every case memo before it is published. Once a case is live, new filings and new story grades are added as they arrive.

The whole build, model by model, is on How it works.

Sources span the spectrum

The stories graded here come from outlets of the left, the right and the center, from wire services to popular blogs. Each is held to one standard: what the filings say. A grade is about the law. It is never about the outlet's politics, and a story that got the law right gets the credit, stated as plainly as any error.

What the grades mean

Each error is labelled Wrong, Misleading, Ambiguous or Missing context, quoted exactly, corrected, and cited to the page of the filing that shows it. The recurring kinds of mistake are collected in the taxonomy of legal confusion.

Not legal advice

Nothing on this site is legal advice, and reading it does not create a lawyer-client relationship with anyone. If you have a legal problem, you need a lawyer licensed where you are, not a website.

Errors and contact

A site that corrects others had better correct itself. Report an error and the editor will read it; corrections are dated and listed on the Corrections page. Anything else: editor@law-bunker.com.
